What is vitamin B1 / thiamine ?
Vitamin B1 is often advertised as a mood or good mood vitamin. In fact, the human organism is dependent on vitamin B1, it is vital. Thiamine is essential for a well-functioning nervous system and plays an important role in energy metabolism and heart health. One of the numerous functions of vitamin B1 in the body is the production of energy from carbohydrates and proteins. The recommended daily intake depends on the daily energy consumption. Since men are generally taller and have more muscle mass, the recommended daily intake of vitamin B1 is 1.2 mg, which is higher than for women with 1.0 mg per day. Vitamin B1 is mainly stored in the blood, liver, kidney and brain.
However, the biological half-life of 9-18 days is relatively short, making regular intake necessary. The vitamin is found in all plant and animal foods. A balanced diet therefore represents an adequate supply of the vitamin. Lean meat and whole grain cereals are particularly rich in thiamine. Also to be preferred are legumes, sunflower seeds, peanuts, tuna and for example potatoes.
